Origin and history

The Tolfetano is an ancient breed originating from the Tolfa Mountains, north of Rome. Descended from indigenous horses and likely influenced by Oriental and Iberian horses, it was selected for its robustness and adaptability to working with cattle. The breed was officially recognized in Italy, and a studbook was established to preserve its unique characteristics. It is closely linked to the culture of the 'Butteri', the cowboys of the Maremma.

Conformation and physique

A medium-sized horse, compact and robust, with strong bone structure and well-developed musculature. It presents a harmonious silhouette, typical of hardy working horses, with a rather stocky build.

Medium-sized head, often a little heavy, with a straight or slightly convex (Roman nose) profile. The eyes are expressive and the nostrils well-opened. The ears are medium-sized and well-set.

Strong, muscular neck, well-set, often a little short and thick, ending in a low but well-sloped wither.

Short, strong back, taut and muscular topline. The chest is broad and deep, indicating good respiratory capacity. The croup is broad, muscular, and slightly sloped, often double.

Strong, clean limbs, with large and well-defined joints. The cannons are short, and the hooves are hard, well-formed, and resilient, adapted to difficult terrain. Feathering is generally sparse.

Feeding the Tolfetano

The Tolfetano is a hardy breed with an efficient metabolism, capable of thriving on medium-quality forage. It tends to gain weight if overfed or insufficiently worked. A diet based primarily on good quality hay and grass is usually sufficient. Concentrates are only necessary for intense work or specific needs (gestation, lactation) and should be given sparingly to avoid excess weight.
