The Sella Italiano is a relatively young breed, created in Italy from the 1970s-1980s. Its objective was to produce a modern sport horse, performing well in show jumping, dressage, and eventing. It originated from selective crosses between traditional Italian saddle breeds (such as the Salernitano, Maremmano) and renowned European sport horse breeds (English Thoroughbred, Anglo-Arabian, Hanoverian, Holsteiner, KWPN, Selle Français). The breed was officially recognized and its studbook established in 1996.

Conformation and physique

The Sella Italiano is an elegant and athletic sport horse, ranging from mesomorphic to dolichomorphic in build. It has a solid yet refined bone structure, with well-developed musculature, indicative of power and agility.

The head is noble, well-proportioned to the body, with a straight or slightly convex profile. The eyes are large, expressive, and lively, the ears medium-sized and well-set. The muzzle is broad and the nostrils open.

The neck is long, well-muscled, and well-set, blending harmoniously into a long and prominent wither. It is carried elegantly, promoting balance and suppleness.

The body is compact and powerful. The back is short and strong, the topline taut and muscular. The chest is deep and wide, allowing for good girth clearance. The croup is long, muscular, and slightly sloped, with a well-set tail.
