Origin and history

The Sumba Pony originates from Sumba Island in Indonesia, where it has been bred for centuries by local populations. It likely descends from crosses between local ponies and horses imported by Asian and European traders. The breed is traditionally used for transport, agriculture, and ritual ceremonies. Although there is no strict official international recognition, it is well-established as a distinct breed in Indonesia.

Conformation and physique

The Sumba Pony is a small, robust, and compact pony with a solid bone structure. It has a rather stocky build, suited to its environment and traditional uses.

The head is medium-sized, often with a straight or slightly convex profile. The eyes are expressive, and the ears are medium-sized and well-set.

The neck is short and muscular, well-set into the shoulders. The withers are generally not very prominent, blending smoothly into the topline.

The back is short and strong, and the topline is straight and solid. The chest is deep, providing good lung capacity. The croup is often sloping and muscular.
