It was developed by the Hutsuls, a mountain people of the Carpathians, for agricultural work and transport in difficult terrain. The breed was officially recognized and studbooks established at the end of the 19th century, particularly in Austria-Hungary. It has survived several wars and difficult periods thanks to its hardiness and conservation efforts.
