Origin and history
The Kladruber is one of the oldest Czech horse breeds, originating from the Imperial Stud Farm of Kladruby nad Labem, founded in 1579 by Emperor Rudolf II. It descends from Spanish and Neapolitan horses, crossed with local horses and Lipizzaner stallions. Initially bred as a ceremonial carriage horse for the Habsburg court, it was officially recognized as a distinct breed in the early 17th century. The breed has survived several crises, including the Napoleonic Wars and both World Wars, thanks to rigorous conservation efforts.
Conformation and physique
The Kladruber is a large, powerful, and elegant horse, with strong bone structure and well-developed musculature. It presents a harmonious silhouette, typical of Baroque horses, with great presence.
The head is large, noble, with an often convex profile (ram's nose), large expressive eyes, and wide nostrils. The ears are well-set and medium-sized.
The neck is long, powerful, and arched, well-set into the withers. The withers are long and prominent, blending harmoniously into the back.
The back is long and strong, the topline is straight and muscular. The chest is broad and deep, the ribs are well-sprung. The croup is long, broad, and slightly sloping, with a high-set tail.
The limbs are strong, with large and well-defined joints. The cannons are short and robust, the hooves are hard and well-formed. Feathering is present, but not excessively profuse.

Feeding the Kladruber
The Kladruber, despite its large size, generally has a rather economical metabolism, inherited from its origins. It requires a balanced diet, rich in good quality forage (hay ad libitum if possible) to maintain its muscle mass and body condition. Concentrates should be adjusted according to its activity level, avoiding excesses to prevent obesity. Particular attention should be paid to mineral and vitamin intake.
