The Nangchen pony is an ancient breed originating from the Nangchen region, in the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, China. It has been bred for centuries by local populations for transport and agricultural work in the high altitudes of the Himalayas. Its official recognition as a distinct breed is more recent, but its lineage is deeply rooted in Tibetan history.

Conformation and physique

It is a small, compact, and robust pony, with solid bone structure and well-developed musculature, adapted to mountainous terrain and harsh climatic conditions. It has a rather stocky build.

The head is medium-sized, with a straight or slightly convex profile. The eyes are expressive and the ears are small and well-placed.

The neck is short, thick, and muscular, well-attached to the Withers. The Withers are not very pronounced, blending harmoniously into the back.

The back is short and strong, the topline is straight and solid. The chest is broad and deep, providing good respiratory capacity. The croup is muscular and slightly sloped.

The limbs are short, strong, and well-conformed, with robust joints and hard, resilient hooves, adapted to rocky terrain. Feathers are generally sparse.

Feeding the Nangchen

The Nangchen pony is a hardy and very economical breed, accustomed to limited and low-quality food resources. Its metabolism is adapted to make the most of coarse forages. It has a natural tendency to gain weight if its diet is too rich. A diet based primarily on good quality hay and grass is sufficient for most individuals. Concentrates are only necessary in cases of intense work or specific needs (gestation, lactation), and should be introduced with caution.
